History:
While there are many different brands and manufacturers of screw-in connectors and even push-in connectors, the “lever connector” is an exceptional example. Invented and released at the beginning of the 21st century, this connector quickly gained acceptance and use worldwide and is increasingly available in the United States.
The lever nut is unique in that it combines the ease of use of a push-in connector with a secure connection by a mechanism that allows the connector to be reused almost indefinitely, all without causing damage to the connector or conductor.
Design and Use:
The XALXAMAW lever connector is similar in design and appearance to a push-in connector. A plastic connector body contains a metal internal structure and a lever mechanism for each port.
Operation:
A common misconception about lever nuts is that the pressure exerted by the closed lever is what holds the conductor in place. In fact, the opposite is true. The lever nut contains a C-spring for each conductor that constantly presses it against a separate busbar. For each wire conductor, the spring is continually compressed against the busbar inside the connector housing. When the lever is open, the spring is compressed, temporarily opening a space between the spring and the bus bar for the conductor.
When the lever is closed, the additional compression on the spring is released and it returns to its resting position, pressing the inserted conductor against the bus bar. The small amount of “clearance” left in the closed lever is intentional to prevent accidental movement of the lever from accidentally actuating the spring and releasing the conductor.
The lever nut allows easy, frictionless insertion of both solid (middle) and stranded (bottom) conductors. The spring is independent for each conductor, and the actual connection occurs between the conductor and the bus bar.
Lever nuts work particularly well for both solid and stranded conductors. This is because they have no friction in the open position. In contrast, the insertion of a conductor into a push-in connector is always a struggle against the friction of a spring pressed against the bus bar. Because the lever nuts are repositionable and reusable, connections and modifications can be made almost indefinitely without damaging the conductor connector or conductor.
